Since taking over, Mike has put in a
stereo system plus the live music ... He
has doubled the dinner business and
increased lunches 60 percent.
Not bad for a young man who had

before but is such a strong believer in
the comeback of Detroit that he wants

thing breaks loose," as he puts it.
Mike's belief in the city was before
General Motors came downtown, and
prior to stadiums and casinos being
talked about with zest ... He has want-
ed to be a part of Detroit with a
restaurant and coffee house people will
enjoy so much they'll come back.

ing covering most of the walls and the
original brick revealed in various
places ... Much of the seating down-
\- stairs and upstairs are old church pews
and beautiful wooden booths ...
Upstairs has art nouveau stained glass
windows and two skylights.
By putting youth, vigor and excite-
ment into today's Jacoby's while pre-

serving its strong tradition as a down-
town Detroit favorite of celebrities,
judges, lawyers, politicians, newspaper
people, etc., Mike has shown an
uncanny foresight in the continuance
of a restaurant's fine reputation that
has been handed down by four genera-
tions.
His coffee house that opens in
October will be a seven-day-a-week
operation ... with the downstairs menu
also available along with the coffee
house items ... It will be one of few
coffee houses with a liquor license for
its exotic coffee drinks, have a six-foot
glassed-in cabinet for fresh-baked pas-
tries, and a four-foot confectionery
chocolates case.
So if you should see that 28-year-
old roller bladinc,b around downtown
/- Detroit, give him a wave and say,
"Nice going, kid" ... What Mike is
doing with a tradition like Jacoby's
deserves attention ... and respect.
