LIFE. LOVE. SEX. (And other unscheduled events.) on more than their ability to fill the needs of a niche market. Winokur attributes their popularity to the varied backgrounds of the musi- cians. Sampson has had extensive for- mal training and composes most of the music, while Donohue has per- formed for several years in Boston- based rock bands. Winokur, a profes- sional photographer, also performed as a percussionist in rock bands. Together, the group collaborates on the scores of the silent films by view- ing the works several times to interpret the director's mood and message. Then, during later viewings, they col- lectively improvise music, recording pieces they like and discarding the rest. The recordings are then fine- tuned to fit the movies. "It takes a lot of work to get the music to change when the scene changes," Winokur said. It also takes a lot of work to orga- nize and haul their instruments from city to city. The group rents large storerooms to hold their various instruments, some of which are made from air conditioning ducts, radiator hoses and horseshoes. "Each one has a different pitch, a different sound," Winokur said. While the orchestra members intend to continue their work with silent film, they have also recently made it into "talkies." With Sampson's scoring, the Alloy Orchestra recently provided the soundtrack to Fast, Cheap and Out of Control, a feature film with a scheduled fall release. The Alloy Orchestra will pro- vide the score for Metropolis, a Fritz Lang film, 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12; Steamboat Bill, Jr:, a Charles Riesner film, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13; The Lost World, 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14; and The Man With The Movie Camera, a Dziga Vertov film, 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, all at the Detroit Film Theatre at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
