cized through letters sent to commu-
nal organizations.
Longtime JCC regular Rabbi David
Nelson of Beth Shalom used the dis-
count to upgrade to a health club
membership. An enthusiastic swimmer
at the Jimmy Prentis Morris JCC's
pool, Rabbi Nelson feels the discount
is a well-deserved perk that should
have been offered long ago.
"I'm delighted to take advantage of
it," he said. "Why'd they wait so
long?"

is not a career known for high
salaries or luxurious perks. But
now there's a consolation prize
for local Jewish communal staff:
discounted membership at the Jewish
Community Center of Metropolitan
Detroit.
The JCC recently began offering
$100 individual memberships to rab-
bis and executives, and 30 percent
discounts to all other staff members
of Detroit synagogues and Federation
constituent agencies.
According to JCC Executive
Director David Sorkin,
the discounts are part
of a larger effort to
enhance the JCC's rela-
tionship with other
Jewish
organizations and to
open up communica-
tion among local lead-
ers.
"If the JCC is work-
ing to act as a pluralis-
tic entity and the center
of the community, then
communal workers
shouldn't feel not wel-
come or that they can't
belong," said Sorkin.
"Many have salaries
that are not as high as
in the for-profit world,
and we don't want
[money] to be a huge
hurdle.
But money wasn't
the only factor, says
Sorkin, especially for
executives and rabbis.
