W

hen Jeremy Haberman
bought the Magic Bag in
Ferndale, he planned on
live music and sporting
events. Bar and bat mitzvah parties
were the last thing that he had in
mind.
But one party has turned into
requests from several others, and the
Magic Bag is gaining a reputation on
the 13-year-old circuit.
"Helene Zack just came to us and
asked if we could do her daughter's
bat mitzvah party here," Haberman
said. "It's not a typical thing to do,
but the interest has spiraled since
then. People want to have their nicer
events here."
Fortunately for the Zacks, previous
plans hit a bit of a snag. "The place
we had originally booked went out of
business," Mrs. Zack said. "Then I
saw the ad in the Metro Times for the
Magic Bag."
Having the party at Magic Bag, on
Wooward north of Nine Mile, was
perfect for the Zacks, since they want-
ed to have a kids party.
"We had about 80 kids and 20
adults, and those were close friends of
the family and relatives," Mrs. Zack

said. "It was very casual also; most
kids wore shorts."
Katy Zack, the honoree, continues
to hear praise from her friends.
"My friends still tell me how much
they enjoyed the party because it was
so different," she said. "The lighting
was really good, and the disc jockey
(DJ) was able to use a really good
sound system."
According to Mrs. Zack, the kids
enjoyed being able to be on stage to
dance.
Having the party at the Magic Bag
can be as expensive or inexpensive as
desired.
"The cost to rent the facility is
$1,000," Haberman said. "People also
need to bring their own DJ and han-
dle the food on their own."
Dealing with the food and DJ was
not a big imposition on Mrs. Zack,
since she was going to have to do that
anyway. "It was for kids, so the menu
was real simple," she said.
Mrs. Zack also didn't feel the need
to spend too much on decorations
either.
"The club has a great atmosphere
for a party," she said. "We didn't need
to do too much to it."
Katy enjoyed it because "it was fun
being unique," she said. "I didn't want
to have an average party."
