Detroit's done an extraordinary job in putting on and planning their games." The 1998 games are continental games, where most cities nationwide and some international guests come to a select city. The Maccabi Games in odd-numbered years are held at several regional sites across the country. According to Silberman, the concept was changed in 1996 with two sites for the continental games. Next year, Charlotte, N.C., will have a Maccabi Games that will be attended mostly by southern athletes that begin school the week of the Detroit games. "The number of athletes that each delegation can bring is based on his- torical precedence, size of the com- munity, and if they were a former host," Kellman said. "The delegations will get their allotment numbers this fall." Horowitz and Kellman estimate that there will be 50-60 delegations from the U.S., three to five from Canada, several South American dele- gations, plus those from Australia, Great Britain and Israel. 0975 Orchard Lake Road, Farrnin : ton I li (248) 661-4050 or (248) 968-1200 • Fax: 968-7240 kind contributions. In 1990, hous- ing and. logistical planning contin- ued until the start of the games. Plotnik says it could happen again next year because of the numbers of people involved in the planning process. "It's going to take 1,000 volunteers and 1,300 homes for the athletes," Plotnik said. "There are 60-90 com- mittee chairpeople and co-chairs that are in charge of putting everything together. "This is a significant youth pro- gram that brings Jewish kids together through athletics."
