George Gershwin and Irving Berlin: One of Gershwin's early jobs was to transcribe Irving Berlin's songs
to the musical page. Berlin composed some 1,500 songs but never acquired the skill of setting down the
musical notes on paper.
• The original first books ever print-
ed in any language in Africa are in He-
brew, and one is on display. It was printed
utilizing hand-cut, moveable type right
after moveable type was invented by a
man forced by the Inquisition to flee Spain
or lose his life. The first thing he did upon
arrival in North Africa was, from his
head, re-create a book.
• When Washington, D.C., was threat-
ened by bombing during World War II,
the Library of Congress took strong mea-
sures to protect its collections. Staff mem-
bers tagged the Judaica, buried the pieces
in sawdust-filled barrels and took it to
coal mines and underground storage ar-
eas in Kentucky and West Virginia. The
largest percentage of any collection pro-
tected was the Judaica be-
cause it was so valuable
and unique.
