Plywood Industry
Tax Decrease?
Jerusalem (JPFS) — Israel's
Ministry of Industry and Trade
will most likely reject the
plywood industry's request to
postpone the 1998 deadline for
reducing the tax on imports to
zero, a ministry official said.
"The industry has not done
anything significant ... to
demonstrate that they have
tried to prepare themselves for
the opening of the market to
imports," said Yifat Turbiner,
an economic adviser to Minis-
ter of Industry and Trade
Natan Sharansky. Industry
representatives met with Sha-
ransky to encourage him not
to ease barriers on imports,
saying that imports from Third
World countries will threaten
their business and cause an in-
crease in unemployment.
In 1991, the Ministry of In-
dustry and Trade decided that,
due to the tough competition
facing the piywood industry, it
would lower import taxes grad-
tiRlly over a seven-year, rather
than a five-year, period.
The ministry grants exten-
sions only if the industry can
demonstrate that it has made
changes in an effort to become
more competitive, such as au-
tomating factories; trimming
staff or honing in on a special-
ized niche.
The plywood industry's nine
factories employ 2,500 work-
ers.
