For the first time in its six-year
existence, the Michigan Jewish
AIDS Coalition (MJAC) will be
securing tickets at several area
congregations for the High Hol-
idays for their clients.
The idea came from one of
MJAC's board members during
a routine meeting, according to
Edwina Davis.
"Its gotten a very warm and
excellent reception from the
synagogues and temples that
have responded," the organiza-
tion's executive director said of
the six-to-eight that have
shown interest.
"We contacted almost every
synagogue in the area — Re-
form, Conservative and Ortho-
dox," Davis said. "However, we
haven't heard from any of the
Orthodox ones yet."
At Adat Shalom in Farm-
ington Hills, "We see it as
reaching out and working as a
community," said synagogue
executive director Alan Yost.
"We had done programs with
MJAC before, and this is just
an extension of that."
Beth Abraham Hillel Moses
Rabbi Aaron Bergman said he
is just trying to help the cause.
"People are in need of being
part of a community," he said.
"AIDS is not talked about much
in the Jewish community, and
there is a resistance to believ-
ing that Jews can get AIDS."
On the Reform side of the
spectrum, Bloomfield Town-
ship's Temple Beth El is also
a willing participant.
"Beth El opens its doors to
any Jew that needs a place to
be for the High Holidays," Rab-
bi Daniel Syme said. "It's a
principle with me that a syna-
gogue has to be an open, spiri-
tual home for those who need
it."
Rabbi Sherwin Wine of
Birmingham Temple said his
congregation was happy to be
involved. "The clients of MJAC
are part of the community and
need to be treated with respect,"
he said. "We always offer a
place to anyone who wants to
attend services. I applaud
MJAC for the work they do. It's
a real service to the communi-
ty."
Davis indicated that many of
the area's synagogues have
worked with MJAC in doing ed-
ucational programs on AIDS
and the HIV virus with their re-
ligious schools. n
