Two-Sided Story At the preliminary hearing a week lat- er, according to Radzinski's mother Pam, bail was set at $40,000. On Aug. 27, bail was reduced to $15,000 and Zora was released. 'The defense attorney (Kirsten Nielsen Hartig) called for an emergency bond hearing, showing that Zora has ties to the community," Oakland County Assis- tant Prosecutor Scott Hamilton said. "It's not something that is unusual." Zora, according to his attorney, is a star athlete and honor student at Oak Park High who's on track to graduate one year early. He works two jobs totalling 60 hours a week, Hartig said, with much of the money given to help the family. He was born at Providence Hospital in Southfield and his mother is an Ameri- can citizen. Hartig tells a different version of what happened. "It was two teens getting into an ar- gument over ethnicity," she said. "There were racial slurs made to Zora and his friends in the car. My client threw a punch in self-defense." According to the statement given to the Farmington Hills police from one of the passengers in Zora's car, Zora "began beating the kid [Radzinski] up. [The wit- A teen-age scuffle quickly turns ugly in Farmington Hills. LONNY GOLDSMITH STAFF WRITER 0 n Aug. 13, Jay Radzinski and his friends went out for an ordinary Slurpee run to the 7-11 on Orchard Lake Road at 13 Mile. They were three friends, hanging out and enjoying the waning days of their summer vaca- tion. Until the moment a green Jeep Chero- kee pulled up beside them. "I was looking at the car because it looked familiar," Radzinski explained. "A car pulls into the parking lot, you look and see if it's someone you know." The seemingly innocent look turned into a nightmare for the 16-year-old North Farmington High School junior. "He came up and asked me, 'What are you looking at?' " Radzinski said. "I told him, 'Nothing.' The next and last thing Radzinski re- membered was the hand of the Jeep dri- ver, 16-year-old Oak Park High School student Simon Zora, wrapping around Radzinski's throat and slamming him into a brick wall. According to the police report, Zora punched the unconscious Radzinski, knocking him to the ground, and then al- legedly kicked him "several times in the face." "I didn't feel anything once I was un- conscious," Radzinski said. "I didn't know I was getting punched or kicked. I don't remember anything." Shelby Berger, one of Radzinski's friends at the scene, threw his body on top of his friend, and Zora left the scene. Steve Krasman, the other friend, ran into Kinko's to call the police. Zora was arrested later that evening on a charge of assault with intent to commit bodily harm less than murder. He was released to the custody of his mother. Mrs. Zora said. "I don't care about a per- son's religion, only if they are a good hu- man being. She dislikes us because we are Catholic." Mrs. Zora said her son was taken to a hospital following the incident for "his hand being cut, and his head and body being sore." The pretrial hearing for the case will be 9:30 a.m. Sept. 8 at the Oakland Coun- ty Courthouse in Pontiac. 11] Congregation Shaarey Zedek B'nai Israel Center BANANAS & PAJAMAS PARTY 0 PONTIAC - BUICK .0000.4...••••• Monday, Sept. 29 6:30 7:30 p.m. • CSZ B'nai Israel $5 per family • Refreshments will be served • Reservations required - 1997 PARK AVENUE BLOWOU ..• • ""*" Save an addition $250 if you're a current Park Avenue Owner! ..amessaimaawaseamamomigsw .
