Ann Arbor's Hebrew Day Schoo welcomes its kindergarteners with an old tradition. Of I t's a Jewish custom dating back to the Mid- dle Ages. Children embark on their Jewish learn- ing by licking honey off a slate of Hebrew letters. That way, the words of the Scrip- tures will always seem as sweet as honey. As sweet as sugar, too, for kindergarteners at the Hebrew Day School of Ann Arbor, who were greeted with an entire spread of goodies at the school's first "Taste of Honey" event. 1 Hannah Rose Alexander enjoys the sweetness of a cookie. In addition to a variety of sweet foods, the boys and girls picked out rulers, cards and games featuring the Hebrew aleph-bet. They also got to meet their teacher, check out the classroom and select colorful new yarmulkes to wear. Hebrew Day School, Ann Arbor's only Jew- ish day school, is located at the Jewish Com- munity Center of Washtenaw County. 0 JULIE WIENER STAFF WRITER KRISTA HUSA PHOTOGRAPHER Siew Hong Teoh and David Hirshleiter pose for a photo with their son, Michael, as part of the night's activities.
