rer says.
"We want these to be emo-
tionally charged reasons."
For lack of such reasons,
many people bum out not long
after warming up.
"Once you have the mental
edge, you address the physical
needs," Maurer says.
Among them: nutrition, mus-
cular strength, cardiovascular
endurance, flexibility and re-
generation.
The last component, giving
the body the rest it needs to re-
bound from physical stress, con-
stantly sabotaged Maurer
before he found the right path.
"I was lifting heavy, breaking
down tissue and not giving my
body enough time to rebuild,"
he says today.
In his 10-week program,
Maurer suggests five days a
week of aerobic exercise. Pick a
principal exercise, something
you like (or can consistently tol-
erate). Do it four days a week,
45 minutes to an hour.

"What I tend to do," Maurer
says, "is the NordicTrac. Then

days. Or I'll go in-line skating
on a weekend. And maybe
throw in indoor rock climbing
for variety.
"I avoid high impact because
I've seen what it can do. My
mother, a professional dancer
in South America and Mexico
City, completely wore out the
cartilage in her joints. Three
years ago, at age 60, she had a
hip replacement."
Maurer Power, as he calls his
programs, includes two days a
week of 45 minutes to an hour
of weight training (preferably
Monday and Friday), stressing
totally different muscle groups
each day.
If you aren't fatiguing your-
self by the 10th to 12th repeti-
tion, the weight is too light.
"My goal with clients," he
says, "is to provide four tuneup
sessions. By the fifth they're on
their own."
By then, too, they should be
asking themselves such things
as, "What must I do to make
sure that I am eating health-
fully throughout the day?" in-
stead of, for example, "Why do
I never lose weight?"
