WEST BLOOMFIELD NURSING CENTER IS THE
HEALTH CARE FACILITY OF CHOICE

Tone The Mind,
Then The Body

JACK WILLIAMS SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

hen George Maurer
went searching for the
key to a better body, he
didn't find it in the
gym, in a book, in a fitness video
or even in a dream.
It was buried somewhere in
his head, imbedded between
those self-imposed barriers that,
given time, can turn resolve into
remorse.
Fueled by fast foods and caf-
feine, Maurer floundered
through high school and college,
his 155 pounds finding plenty of
hiding space in a generous 6-foot
1-inch frame.
Then he saw his father, a
prostate-cancer patient, over-
come a death sentence by re-
tooling his lifestyle and diet. He
saw professional motivator An-
thony Robbins kick some serious
pysche, exploring the mind's in-
finite capacity to either sabotage
or empower.
Today, 40 pounds heavier and
armed with an attitude to match
his anatomy, Maurer is a per-
sonal trainer based at the Sport-
ing Club at Aventine in San
Diego.
"Eighty percent of getting last-
ing results comes from knowing
how to use the power of your
mind," he says.
"Whether it's overeating or
not exercising, before focusing
on what to do physically you
must deal with the source of
what controls all that you do or
don't do: the 3-pound computer
between your ears."

Equipped with credentials
from the American College of
Sports Medicine and training in
exercise physiology at Universi-
ty of California at San Diego,
Maurer is flexing his motiva-
tional muscle these days through
some Robbins-style seminars of
his own.
Considering that some sur-
veys have shown that at least 50
percent of us don't exercise due
to lack of motivation, Maurer
would seem to have a readily ac-
cessible audience.
"A lot of times," Maurer says,
"there aren't enough reasons for
a person to change and reach a
goal. First, you've got to want it
and you have to (beginital) want
(endital) to be responsible."
His five steps to commitment
start with a command: "Get rid
of all possible stories telling
yourself how you can't succeed
and commit to this program for
the next 10 weeks."
He'll have you writing down
three things that you can do
within the next hour to support
that commitment.
"One," he said, "might be call-
ing a friend and asking for their
support and even asking them if
they want to join you. It could be
getting a friend to take a Po-
laroid picture of yourself today
so that you have a great 'before'
picture.
"Be creative and have fun."
If you can't come up with at
