to air a controversial program.

ing opinions and policies of the
people who seem unwilling to
share this land and yet unable to
let it go."
According to Gad-Harf, the
film's bias does nothing but "fan
the flame of antagonism between
the Arab and Jewish communi-
ties." It's an obstacle to better ties,
he said.
"I am concerned by the impact
on the people who are not in-
formed. They might draw conclu-
sions not based on fact."
Gad-Harf objected to the airing
of the film after viewing it with
fellow WTVS board members Is-
mael Ahmed and Terek Daoud,
both members of Detroit's Arab
community.
"I was the one who strenuous-
ly objected to the airing of the pro-
gram," he said. "It was biased and
outdated, and would serve to pro-
mote antagonism locally between
the Jewish and Arab communi-
ties. They acknowledged it was bi-
ased, but they felt that this was a

point of view sympathetic to the
Palestinian cause which was in-
sufficiently presented by televi-
sion and deserved airing."
Channel 56 will offer a "wrap-
around" program following the
show, bringing representatives
of both communities together to
debate the issues. Torn Hayes is
expected to appear as part of the
program. Because of Mr. Hayes'
participation and the very na-
ture of this broadcast, the Jew-
ish Community Council, as well
as the Anti-Defamation League,
refused to participate in the de-
bate.
"What I've learned about the
packaging of the wrap-around
show makes me feel more strong-
ly that the program not air," said
Gad-Harf 'They have invited the
producer of the program to serve
on the panel, and this person has
a history of anti-Israel filmmak-
ing. Look, I support Channel 56's
right to air programs of different
points of view. Clearly, though,

about the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict.
WTVS-Channel 56 General
Manager Steve Antoniotti calls it
a "point-of-view" documentary
without any illusions of balance.
David Gad-Harf, executive di-
rector of the Jewish Community
Council of Metropolitan Detroit
and a member of the WTVS board
of trustees and strategic planning
committee, simply called it quits.
Gad-Harf, after viewing the
controversial film, said he'd step
down from the board if it airs.
And air it will, at 5:30 p.m. Sun-
day, Aug. 31.
"People and the Land" is the
production of independent pro-

local public television stations
around the country by the Inde-
