There are lost of as- pects of divorce law that could be handled differently if the rab- binate would approach them dif- ferently." Many end up in the feminist counselling centers. "I've dealt with hundreds of problem di- vorces," Brenner says. "But the re- ally tragic cases we've come across are incest within the ultra-Or- thodox world. Young women come to us who are very scared of being ostracized within their communi- ties. They come for counselling, but they ask the therapist not to go to their communities and not to prosecute the fathers, uncles or brothers responsible. "This is not the task of the reli- gious council, but it's part of my commitment to change things." On her way to what should have been her first meeting as a member of the Netanya religious council — from which she was po- litely, but firmly, ejected by her downstairs neighbor — Brenner was approached by a Russian im- migrant. He told her the town's large immigrant community was excited "that you're going to be on the council, that we'll have some- one who will listen to us." Not yet, it seems. The Federation Annual Meeting will take place on Tuesday, October 7, 1997, 7:30 p.m. at Congregation Beth Abraham Hillel Moses. Aronson Treasurer Secretary Executive Secretary #1 IN BUICK SALES Dr. Egon Mayer is founder and head of the New-York-based Jew- ish Outreach Institute (JOI), a body dedicated to helping the in- termarried find their place with- in the Jewish community. And with more than 50 percent of American Jews believed to be marrying non-Jews, the success of such efforts, Mayer points out, will determine the future of the American-Jewish community. The same 1990 National Jew- ish Population Survey that showed an intermarriage rate of 52 percent among American Jews also reported that 40 per- cent of the intermarried go to High Holiday services in a syna- gogue and 35 percent contribute to one or more Jewish charities. As Mayer sees it, these figures indicate an interest in Jewish af- fairs that can be built upon. "And in any case," he asks rhetorical- ly, "what is the alternative?" While Mayer believes that the welcome mat should be put out for all intermarried couples, he knows that some are more likely than others to "make Jewish choices." Particularly responsive, he says, are couples with young children who want their offspring to feel that they are members of a com- munity, that they belong. ❑ AL HARRIS 1997 NOMINATING COMMITTEE TaMaROFF Chair 28585 Telegraph Rd. 353-1300 Penny B.
