Moskowitz, director of cur- riculum for the Jewish Educa- tion Center of Cleveland, started faxing an Immediate Response Curriculum to the tragedy to some two dozen Jewish camps nationwide. The next day the curriculum went out via two e-mail lists: the Reform educators list, known as NATE, and the Jewish educa- tion and Internet list, inter-jed. The curriculum was posted also in a downloadable form in the Jewish education section of America On Line's Jewish Com- munity. "We tried to really keep in mind that this is camp and this is not school," said Moskowitz. "Quite often when there is a tragedy, the immediate response is, 'We're going to do a service; we're going to light candles; we're going to make everybody cry.' We really wanted to help camps find other responses." The curriculum includes the traditional Jewish responses of praying "El Malei Rachamim," reciting Kaddish after the fu- nerals had taken place, reciting Psalms and studying the Mish- nah in memory of the dead Is- raelis. There were artistic ideas as well, such as creating a peace quilt and fashioning a collage from newspaper headlines and pictures. Among the entries in a "responses through the written word" were placing a large sheet of paper on a wall for campers and writing graffiti about the bombings or wishes for peace. And there were a couple of cyber suggestions included: campers sending personal e-mails to Is- rael and monitoring news dis- patches on the Web sites. Perhaps the most poignant element of the curriculum was a poem by Danny Siegel titled "Psalm 25 — The Tanks and Planes Are Not The True Sal- vation." The verse concludes: We are chosen, I but weary of the tear soaked pages I of our histo- ry. I We ask nothing of You, Lord, I but opportunities to I raise I carnations in the Negev I and a crop of cinnamon I in Galilee. ❑ New York Jewish Week
