Our Goal: Quality Jewish education Aff Your Child To Ensure e Future the chapters in our Hebrew gram- mar book. The stories were dull as chicken soup without canaidalach because the plot was slaved to the vocabulary lesson — the Hebrew equivalent of "See Spot Run." A racy chapter would be titled "David Takes a Walk." The story was a weird world of mother, father, brother, sister, and windows, tables, eggplant, good morning and good night. Who could make it interesting? Sholom Aleichem could have brought in Beryl the Jewel Thief from Min- sk and still have broken his pen- cil in frustration. Sometimes Father (Abba), a brilliant chatterbox, would say things like, "See the table". It was the highlight of the two-page sto- ry. We left class talking to each oth- er about windows, fathers, and eggplants in words of single syl- lables. "You talk so strange when you return home from cheder, Teddy," said my mother (Ema). "Yes, how are you, my moth- er. When will you bring egg- plant?" As Ema and Abba chattered away in our books, we inmates were fixated by the two big, open windows of the room. There wasn't one of us who couldn't stare out that window and clearly see the baseball field, five miles away — on the other side of town — and hear the exuberant shouts of the players — our non-Jewish pals. Whatta religion they had! None of this three-day-a-week impris- onment — only Sunday school. Oh well, I must have done something right. Pve got a grand- daughter who's the star of her He- brew day school class. Sure, why not. She devotes no time at all to baseball practice. ❑ Eiwt_ 1 /7 ten °f ! Ill-Prepared For Work World Most high school students think they are ready for higher educa- tion or employment, but employ- ers generally don't agree with them, according to an Amway/Ju- nior Achievement survey. According to employers, stu- dents are ill-prepared to work with different kinds of people, read training manuals or use math-re- lated skills. Less than 10 percent of sur- veyed employers felt that high school seniors showed strong ver- bal and written skills. Thirty per- cent thought students had some understanding of how business works, just 3 percent thought stu- dents had a good grasp on busi- ness dealings. The survey, conducted by Rop- er Starch Worldwide, was based on interviews with 303 human re- source executives from small, medium and large companies and with 969 high school seniors. — Copley News Service Who am l (248) 539 8012 stepping Stones offers a comfortable • • eNironment.for families with.children to Jearn about Jewish heritage and traditions: . with this ad • exp. 9/5/97 Gall now for more.infOrmation • or to register (248) 354.450 .
