The If a Jewish couple in Eastchester, N.Y., had known what they would find in a box of Shabbat candles a few weeks ago, they might have taken a match to that object as well as the can- dlewicks. They found a Christian mis- sionary pamphlet. Joan Freedman, of Eastch- ester, says she noticed the pam- phlet, marked "Eretz Yisrael" with a Magen David underneath, at the bottom of the box whose contents she had kindled each Friday night for the last several months. "I thought some Orthodox or- ganization had put something in there," she says. She bought the box at a local "major supermar- ket" earlier this year, but does not remember when or where. Then she read the typed pas- sages, with the Creator's name spelled G-D, from the Torah and the prophets — and the state- ment that "G-D wants you to ac- cept Yeshua as your Messiah and believe in Him. "Yeshua, whose name ap- peared several times in the pam- phlet, is the Hebrew name of Jesus and is often used, instead of the English version, in prose- lytizing literature. "Once I started to read, I knew" the pamphlet's origin, Freedman says. "I was very an- noyed. I was very upset." The pamphlet is anonymous, bearing no sponsoring organiza- tion's name or address. The box is marked "Holyland Candles: Is- raeli Candles ... Distributed by HKS Marketing Limited ... Brooklyn 11211." No such firm is listed in the phone book or is available from the NYNEX information opera- tor. The pamphlet was likely placed in the box at the super- market or at the manufacturing plant by an evangelistic-minded shopper or employee, says Philip Abramowitz, director of the New York Jewish Community Rela- tions Council's Task Force on Missionaries and Cults. He says he receives occasion- al complaints from people who find such tracts in Judaica items. "It happens every once in a while here," says David Kerner, manager of J. Levine Books and Judaica, in Manhattan. "They come and stick things in books promoting their agenda." ❑ New York Jewish Week LOCATED ON THE JEWISH COMMUNITY CAMPUS. THE QUALITY OF CARING.
