Dr. Schorsch, in turn, says one
of his strongest influences was his
father. A pious, self-sacrificing
man, Emil Schorsch entered the
rabbinate after fighting at Ger-
many's western front during
World War I.
"After the carnage that he saw,
he decided to become a rabbi, to
advance the cause of peace a lit-
tle bit," says Dr. Schorsch.
He trained at Breslau Rab-
binical Seminary, the first mod-
em rabbinic seminary in
Germany and a spiritual ances-
tor ofJTS. Over the chancellor's
desk hangs a portrait of Heinrich
Graetz, a founder of Breslau.
"He's one of my intellectual and
religious heroes," says Dr.
Schorsch.
In 1940, his parents brought
him to the United States, where
his father was spiritual leader of
Mercy and Truth Congregation,
a Conservative shut in Pottstown,
Pa. His annual starting salary
was $1,500, Dr. Schorsch says,
"and he still tithed himself."
Although Ismar Schorsch nev-
er was a pulpit rabbi, he said he
came to know the rabbinate "in-
timately" through his father's ex-
ample.
"In the final analysis, he af-
fected the lives of many people.
He was a man of integrity and
learning, and he blended tradi-
tion and modernity beautifully,"
he says.
It's not the first time Dr.
Schorsch mentions the impor-
tance of blending tradition and
modernity, and it won't be the
last. As a leader of the Conserva-
tive movement, he feels a duty to
articulate a middle ground, and
to hold it firm.
The biggest challenge facing
Conservative Jews, he says, is to
reduce the number of inter mar-
riages. "We're not prepared to do
it by compromises that violate the
integrity of Judaism," he says.
"The Reform are more ready to
compromise. The Orthodox are
more willing to create insular
communities."
As the pluralism issue contin-
ues to polarize Diaspora Jews, Dr.
Schorsch is adamant that Israeli
Jews deserve choices, even if they
don't themselves realize it.
"I don't think it's healthy for Is-
rael if the majority of the people
are forced to be secular because
there are no alternatives," he
says. "I'm convinced that once
they are exposed [to Reform, Con-
servative and Reconstructionist
Judaism], they will embrace one
form or another.
"Otherwise," he says, "you're
just going to have people who
speak Hebrew without any Jew-
ish content." ❑
