Recently, the USDA's Food
Safety and Inspection Service an-
nounced it has proposed a rule
that, if adopted, is certain to ease
the lot of individuals like Stone.
The ruling requires manufac-
turers to identify all ingredients
that go into a food product. A de-
cision is expected within two
months.
Rabbi David Saperstein,
RAC's director, was pleased. The
proposed rule, he said, would be
a service to the "hundreds of
thousands of Jews ... who want
to follow their religious dictates
in not eating pork" and added
that it was a "major contribution
to the ability of Americans to ex-
ercise their religious freedoms."
Several Orthodox groups re-
fused to comment on the record.
"Anything I would say would
come of as being too cynical," one
spokesman said. If Stone was so
concerned with not eating pig,
said another, "she could have
saved herself a lot of heartache
by simply purchasing a product
with a hechsher [indicating rab-
binic supervision]. We're living
in the 1990s, after all. Kosher
food is no longer scarce." ❑

BINYAMIN L. JOLKOVSKY

anion Stone, a Reform
Jew from Stamford,
Conn., was so dis-
tressed to learn that
' - chicken sausage she purchased
may have been enclosed in pork
casings, she contacted the Unit-
ed States Department of Agri-
culture and requested that the
agency begin requiring compa-
nies to identify the source of their
packaging.
When she struck out on her
own,
she turned to the Reform
_
,- Judaism's Washington-based Re-
ligious Action Center, which
since 1995, has been at work at
what they've dubbed the
"sausage caper."
