The hockey team was also un-

their second game, Detroit got off
to a quick start and put away
Sephardic of Brooklyn, N.Y., 19-0.
In girls soccer, Detroit went up
3-1 on Pittsburgh at halftime,
and rolled to a 7-2 victory on
goals by Michelle Weiner, Stacey
Raff and Mindy Pickens, and two
each for Lindsey Fox and Erin
Konheim.
The boys soccer team defeated
the Upper West Side (New York)
3-0, and played to a 2-2 tie against
Washington, D.C.
In the opener, Jordan Gruber
capped of a hat-trick by head-
ing in a corner kick from Dan
Spokajny late in the game.
Gruber kept his hot streak
going against D.C. by scoring
another goal. The Detroit
team found themselves trail-
ing 2-1, but Cale Wasserman
scored to tie the game.
Swimming was the only
sport to award medals on the
opening day, and Detroiters
took home 17 medals, includ-
ing seven golds in six individ-
ual events and the 400
freestyle relay. Jonathan
Schwartz won three individ-
ual golds.
"Detroit makes up most of
the meet, so we are competing
with kids that we know," said
Jared Matz, who won two
golds and a silver medal on
the first day.
Twenty of the 50 swimmers
competing in Pittsburgh were
Detroiters.
"It's hard for the kids be-
cause the competition isn't
there," said swim coach Dena
Bernstein. "All things con-

Volleyball opened with Detroit
playing the host team twice —
Pittsburgh's black and gold team,
and losing twice.
"It's a really competitive pool
we're playing in," said coach
Aaron Seller. 'We can do well and
medal, but we need to keep our
head in the game."
The Maccabi Games in Pitts-
burgh concluded Thursday, and
the athletes will be returning to
Detroit today. ❑
