Israel wants to be the center of the universe. And Donald Trump
seems ready to help.

ADAM DICKTER SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

D

onald Trump, who recently purchased the Miss
Universe competition from Madison Square Gar-
den, says Israel is a top contender for next year's
pageant.
"Israel wants it very much," said Trump during a re-
cent appearance on "Larry King Live." "There's a good
chance it will be in Jerusalem, to coincide with cele-
brations of the 50th anniversary [of Israel]."
Maureen Reidy, acting president of Miss Universe,
confirmed that Israel was a finalist, but said Jerusalem
was not an option. "Several areas are being considered
within Israel," she said, calling Trump's comment "a
mistake." She declined to name other cities under con-
sideration.
Reidy said 10 other countries were bidding to be the
host, but there is a "very good chance" Israel will win.
Host countries provide goods and services in exchange
for publicity and tourist plugs, as well as the tourist
boom the pageant itself brings. "Eighty countries com-
pete from around the world," she said. 'The show is seen
by 2.5 billion people. There will be 10 to 15 minutes of
pre-taped segments that highlight the host country in
the most favorable light possible."
Israeli contestants have long participated in the
pageant. Rina Mor, an army aeronautics instructor from
the town of Tivyon, was named Miss Universe in 1976.
Not everyone is pleasantly excited. Rabbi Avi Shafran,
spokesman for the Orthodox umbrella group Agudath
Israel of America, said the pageant is a "sordid specta-
cle" that has no place in the Holy Land.
"Pageants that parade women as objects should be
repugnant to all," said Shafran. "To foist it upon the
quintessentially Jewish and holiest land is an affront
to all Jews with any sensitivity to the Torah." ❑
