EL AL page 110

"since the nature of traffic has
changed. And we have to concen-
trate more on service.
"We've started an intensive
training program for employees
using simulations to improve our
service, and we want to introduce
more healthy food in business
class," he said.
Referring to the security de-
mands on the airline, Feldschuh
said "we have to overcome [them]
by being more efficient and work-
ing harder. We have no other
choice but to be more efficient and
to be better if we want to survive."
He said that despite the move
towards greater efficiency, there
would be no change regarding se-
curity — even if it is privatized.
The airline has a security staff of
1,500. The government of Israel,
which provides $40 million of the
airline's $70 million security bud-
get, would continue to provide
that support even after the air-
line is privatized, he noted.
El Al lost $83 million last year
and expects to lose another $40
million this year, Feldschuh said.
But he predicted that within two
years El Al will break even and
he gave himself one more year to
improve service.
"We still perceive ourselves —
even as a private company — as
an airline that will carry out a na-
tional mission while achieving
maximum profit," he added. "An
essence of the company is the re-
lationship it developed with Jew-
ish federations all over the
world."
UJA-Federation of New York
has nearly always flown its mis-
sions to Israel on El Al and a
spokeswoman said it had no
plans to change if the airline was
privatized "provided it remained
competitive."

UMMER LEASE SPECIALS

Frankfurt Museum:
A Major Attraction

RUTH ROVNER

SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

The poster shows a caricature of
an overweight man. His eyes are
beady, his stomach bulges, his
nose seems extra large — and he
wears a Star of David on a chain.
It is obviously anti-Semitic —
and was meant to be. In fact, this
poster was once used as Nazi pro-
paganda in Germany. But now it
serves a very different purpose.
It's one of many items on dis-
play in the Jewish Museum of
Frankfurt. Among many other
themes, the museum documents
the rise of anti-Semitism in Ger-
many.
With extensive exhibits cover-
,- ing hundreds of years of Jewish
history in Germany, this muse-
um is a unique cultural attrac-
tion in Frankfurt drawing 50,000
