A new assisted living facility will debut in late fall.

building's not ready for oc-
cupancy yet.
The old Prentis Manor
nursing home at Lahser Road and
Civic Center Drive in Southfield
was to open in June as a new Jew-
ish assisted living facility, but be-
cause of unforeseen circumstances
Elan Village won't open until mid
or late fall, said John Hamburger
of Assisted Living Associates.
Prentis Manor, the last nurs-
ing home under the auspices of
the Jewish Federation of Metro-
politan Detroit, closed in Decem-
ber. Hamburger and partner
Richard L. Fink decided to see if
they could be as successful in De-
troit as they've been in other com-
munities with such facilities and
bought Prentis. The title passed
in June, but the price of the sale
by Federation was undisclosed.
An architectural plan for the
renovation of the 35,000-square-
foot building is due any day, Ham-
burger said. The city of Southfield
must grant a building permit to

allow for a physical reconfigura-
tion of a shower room, but other
changes are cosmetic, including
the replacement of wall coverings,
furniture and carpeting. Prospec-
tive administrators are being in-
terviewed, Hamburger said.

dementia care.

"We want somebody with a
major league care background
and somebody who can coordi-
nate well with the Jewish com-
munity so we can have a good
relationship under our preferred
provider agreement," Hamburg-
er said.
Under the agreement, forged
with the Federation, 10 percent
of Elan's 78 beds will be set aside
for lower-income residents.
Thus far, Elan has received 35
inquiries about the new building,
but Hamburger isn't sure if all the

callers are on a waiting list to get
in.
Besides maintaining a kosher
kitchen — Elan has contracted
with HDS, the company that pro-
vides food service to the Jewish
Home and Aging Services' Fleis-
chman Residence in West Bloom-
field — the facility plans to hire
rabbis to come in during the week
to conduct services. Members of
Young Israel of Southfield will
conduct Shabbat services, as they
did when the building was occu-
pied by Prentis.
While the Fleischman Resi-
dence on the Jewish Community
Campus is an assisted living fa-
cility, Elan Village will also offer
services for people with demen-
tia. Round-the-clock monitoring,
medication dispensing, and
bathing, grooming and dressing
assistance will be available. ❑
