It's navy, with vertical and horizontal stripes. It's lightweight, so I can wear it in the summer, but the dark color makes it great for the winter. And I got it on sale, too. I had in mind several candidates from my tie collection that might love hanging out with my new jacket, but when putting them to- gether, renli zed they didn't work. After two weeks of searching through my closet, the mall, as- sorted boutiques and street ven- dors, I've found no tie that matches. I'm a frustrated, beaten man, and my jacket mocks me from its lofty perch in the closet. I learned several lessons from this unfortunate clothing experi- ence. Lesson No. 1: Never go shop- ping without using the buddy system. Lesson No. 2: Find a friend who knows about this stuff I might be a smart, ftmny or cool guy (at least according to my moth- er), but one thing I don't have is the instinct for fashion. And since I can't wear jeans and a golf shirt to work, that's really a handicap. I suspect I'm not the only guy with this problem. Thirigs have come a long way since casual Fridays began— gone are the days when a navy blazer, some shade of light brown pants and a diagonally striped tie on a white shirt sufficed. Men's fash- ions are starting to evolve at the same pace as women's, and men are drowning in the new options. We need help adjusting to this new reality. (Attention female readers: I know you're very skeptical right now, but please stay with me. You're probably thinking some- thing like: "Hey, I've dealt with this since I was 5. No sympathy, pal." But if you had to suddenly learn something manly, you might be lost too. And besides, we can al- ways use your help.) For years, women have been in- tegrating various items of cloth- ing: blouses, skirts, hose, earrings, brooches, makeup and more. Men aren't used to this stuff — look around, and you'll quickly agree. We wear checks with stripes, purple with green and orange, and we think all of it goes with a pair of Dockers. It's easy to pick out men's fash- ions today: We've all heard of khakis and deep-blue dress shirts. Those metallic ties are the rage, as Matt Mossman, a Windsor, Ontario, native, has been stuck in his closet for days, trying to find a matching tie. are jackets with more than two buttons. But trying to merge these trendy items into one nonclnshing outfit is rocket science. Pattern sizes and shapes, col- ors, fabrics plus maybe 47 other factors need careful consideration before a tie and coat can be con- sidered a match. That's not exact- ly easy, especially at 7:30 a.m. While dressing in the morning is the best time to think up a good ex- cuse to leave work early that day, so there's no time for complicated clothing decisions. Sure, there's a little help offered in the men's magazines. GQ used to be pretty lonely on the rack, but now there are lots to choose from: Esquire, Details and so on. And there's even a men's fashion mag- azine in disguise for those who feel like weenies reading about fash- ion: I picked up a copy of Men's Journal last week because it looked like a manly reading expe- rience. But right after the South Pole adventure epic, those model guys were showing me how easy it was for their ties to match. Still, following the magazines would require a whole new wardrobe every season, and that's not going to happen. Speaking for the group, I can say that men have other important things to spend money on, such as dates or all the extra food we have to eat and the football games we have to go to. The women around us should step up to the plate on this one. We've been eagerly teaching you about touchdowns and field goals for years, whether you already knew it or not. Please return that dubious favor. Reach out to your guy friends, and let them know you'll be a source for fashion advice without making them feel dumb. We're honestly trying to become fashion literate, and that's to your own advantage. Just think: with some reason- able training, there won't be a need to fight wardrobe battles before im- portant parties. And walking down the street will be much easier with- out those clashing combinations visible only to the female eye. Women are all we have to turn to. We certainly can't bounce ideas off each other: It just wouldn't work. So if you help us look sharp, we'll be forever appreciative. Make sure our ties match, and that we don't wear silly socks. Help us recognize brazen clashes. That's the sort of support we need to get over this rough stage of fashion infancy. And while you're at, maybe someone can please help me find a tie for my jacket? ❑ -...oillimeilieINNIAMOO~N.041.ItleWiNNP4ONOSIIPPNPPWIIIImwmNw..00iweioVWWlmwwillimoeP•Pmie~o.a.ij
