dent of the Young Israel of North-
ridge. He says he is "for sure" the
youngest president ever of a
Young Israel congregation in the
U.S., maybe of any Jewish con-
gregation in the country.
"I don't have a lot of free time,"
says the senior at an Orthodox
day school, whose presidential re-
sponsibilities include fund-rais-
ing, supervising a $60,000 annual
budget, running board meetings.
And making public announce-
ments — his least favorite activ-
ity. "I try to keep 'em short."
It's also "difficult to ask people
for money," he said.
He can be confident where that
money goes — younger brother
Daniel, also 16, is treasurer of the
congregation.

CHRYSLER EMPLOYEES SAVE EVEN MORE

A 16-year-old
leads a
congregation.

/-

\ _

Andrew Weisman, who in-
tends to spend a year after high
school studying at an Israeli
yeshiva, is working at the Man-
hattan office of the National
Council of Young Israel during
his summer vacation, upgrading
the organization's Web site.
He says he declared for the
synagogue presidency two years
ago, after a major earthquake in-
flicted heavy damage on many
L.A. structures, including his
Young Israel. He wanted to be-
come involved in the renovations,
"to give back to the community."
When he announced his in-
tentions, the congregation's rab-
bi was incredulous. "At first he
thought I was talking about the
presidency of the youth minyan."
Weisman kept talking. "Finally
it dawned on him that I wasn't
joking, and that there wasn't a
youth minyan."
Weisman, who defeated a can-
didate in his 40s, heads an offi-
cers' slate whose other members,
aside from his brother, are "nor-
mal aged." He has guided the
shul's renovations, balanced its
budget and increased member-
ship by 10 percent, to some 100
families.
"It's very rewarding," he says.
"The community is growing."
The job's demands have forced
him to give up watching "Sein-
feld" on TV, a prized pastime.
"God provides the time," he says,
"but He doesn't provide too much
extra time."
Weisman's Young Israel has a
two-term limit for presidents. Af-
ter he returns from Israel in a few
years, he'll probably get involved
again in the Jewish community
— "Whatever God throws my
way. The title isn't important.
The main thing is to serve." ❑
