ON TELEGRAPH

I scanned your article regarding
Jewishness in some television
characters ("To Be Or Not To Be
Jewish" July 11) with moderate
interest. However, the last quote
about the Fran Drescher program
causes me to write this letter.
I refuse to watch that show and
did not do so for the past season
precisely because of the portray-
als of Fran, her mother and her
grandmother. I find them insult-
ing, not funny.
You need only spend a little
time assisting somewhere like
Menorah House to realize how far
from "Yetta" our elders are. Per-
haps I am the only person who
feels this way, but I am deter-
mined to share my opinion with
those who think that no one ob-
jects to those characterizations.

rary cancellation of peace talks,
the gruesome color pictures in the
next day's newspaper with
splashy headlines like Terror On
Bus No. 5."
The year after I left Israel, Ra-
bin was assassinated by a right-
wing Jew, and the No. 18 bus
—which stopped in front of my old
apartment and which I had rid-
den countless times— was blown
up two weeks in a row.
But every time the pain is
fresh.
The newspaper reports say that
in the blast a pile of watermelons
exploded and that the juice of
smashed fruit mixed with the
blood, adding to the macabre look
of the marketplace.
The symbolism is so obvious it
seems a cliche, but I can't stop
thinking about that scene: the cul-
tivated, perfectly ripened fruits
and vegetables — their varied col-
ors and textures and tastes so full
of beauty and potential — strewn,
wasted and rotting on the blood-
stained ground. ❑
