Israel Sells
Samurai Bonds

Jerusalem (JPFS) — Israel will
float some $130 million of bonds
on the Japanese Samurai mar-
ket, Accountant-General Shai
Talmon announced.
Israel's first entry into the
market should have taken place
in May but was delayed because
of the Japanese Finance Min-
istry's ongoing investigation into
the activities of Nomura Secu-
rities Co. Ltd., which allegedly
made illegal transactions. In
March, Israel chose the compa-
ny to head the flotation.
The Daiwa investment bank
will now head the flotation. The
bonds, worth some 15 billion
Japanese yen, will be issued for
10 years, the longest term al-
lowed for first-time players on
the Samurai. The government
appointed Mitsui, Yasuda, Wani
and Maeda to act as its legal rep-
resentative for the flotation.
Meanwhile, both Moody's In-
vestors Service and Standard
and Poor's said they would cred-
it rate the flotation at A3 and A-
minus respectively.
This is a continuation of the
companies' policy towards Israel
since 1995, the first time the
country was given an A credit
rating.
This is a sign of confidence in
the stability of the Israeli econo-
my, according to the Treasury.
