The famous Golan Heights is
definitely an area to explore with
the remnants of the Syrian
bunkers. Visit the lovely little
town of Katzrtin, the Archaeo-
logical Museum and the Golan
winery. An audio-visual presen-
tation and wine-tasting eaperi.
ence is a highlight.
If you like more physical activ-
ity, the Golan offers horseback
rides, jeep rides by day and night
and mountain bikes which can be
rented.
Other places to visit in the
north include the large Bet She'an
excavations. For a wonderful
swimming experience, plunge into
the cool, fresh water of Sachna.
There is a grassy area for picnics;
there are also dean restroome and
a place to buy a cool drink or
snack.
Israel is a land of surprises, es-
pecially in the northern area. ❑

Back on May 30, 1972, the last
thing anyone expected was a sur-
prise attack from the Japanese
Red Army.
The pro-Palestinian "army"
had only three gunmen, but their
bullets turned the luggage
carousel at Israel's Lod Airport
into an apocalypse of blood and
broken glass that left 25 dead and
76 wounded. •
Among the dead were 15 Puer-
to Rican Christian pilgrims and
12 Israelis. Recently, the 25th an-
niversary of the tragedy was com-
memorated at UJA-Federation
headquarters, as a broad spec-
trwn of Israelis, American Jews
and Latino groups came together
not only to mourn butte bring
New York's Jews and Puerto Ri-
cans closer together through the
first of what is to be the annual
Para Shalom Scholarships for
Peace; the awards were given to
four local students to attend edu-
cational programs in Israel and
Puerto Rico.
The students -- Elisa Klein-
haus of Barnard College, Melissa
Rivera of Pace University, Vanes-
sa Santiago of Brooklyn College,
and Allyna Steinberg of Queens
College—were selected by Hillel,
the Jewish college society, and the
Latino's Aspira youth organiza-
tion.
Rabbi Robert Kaplan of the
JCRC pointed out that this
memorial was giving life to an
inter-communal camaraderie
that could only strengthen the
forces of good. GI
