GABRIEL LEVENSON
SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

The spring rain falling on Monti-
cello enhanced, somehow, the
sheer exultation we shared with
hundreds of others touring the
home and gardens of Thomas Jef-
ferson.
The visit inspired delight in the
magnificence of the stately Clas-
sical Revival building he designed,
in the elegance of the furnishings
he commissioned from the finest
American and European crafts-
men of the time, in the range of
household tools and instruments
he invented and in the beauty of
the gardens and orchards he cul-
tivated.
With the possible exception of
Benjamin Franklin, Jefferson was
the closest American approxima-
tion of the universal man. The in-
scription on the simple monument
he designed for his grave contains
what he himself considered the
greatest achievements of his life:
"Author of the Declaration of In-
dependence, of the Statute of Vir-
ginia for religious freedom, and
father of the University of Vir-
ginia."
Monticello, Jefferson's archi-
tectural masterpiece, is the only
house in the United States on the
United Nations' prestigious World
Heritage List of international trea-
sures. The building surmounts a
hilltop; hence, its name, the Ital-
ian word for "Little Mountain."
From that elevation, "How sub-
lime," Jefferson wrote, "to look
down into the workhouse of na-
ture, to see her clouds, hail, snow,
rain, thunder, all fabricated at our
feet." At Monticello, we, too, can
observe "the workhouse of nature"
— and of man, as well.
The small family cemetery,
which contains Jefferson's own
monument, is at one end of Mul-
berry Row, the long, 1,000-foot
promenade on which the cabins
and workshops of Monticello's
slaves were situated. Nothing re-
mains of them, but at the opposite
end of Mulberry Row, closest to
the main house, we discover the
only other grave in the vast, 1,000-
acre property.
A marker identifies the site as
the burial place of Rachel Macha-
do Phillips Levy; her interment at
