formed of the deception, Russian
Jews had several reactions.
"Some of them went away. We
turned around 100 people." Oth-
ers said they are just here to lis-
ten to the music and didn't want
to leave.
"Some of them really got an-
gry, asking, 'Why are they doing
this to us?' And some of them
said we in the Jewish communi-
ty should do such things for
them. They said, "Why don't you
hold concerts for us?"' where Ju-
daism could be spread.
Rabbi Pollack said he brought
the request to several Jewish
leaders in the community but
they told him it was too expen-
sive.
"Our funds are not nearly as
much compared to the funds of
the Christian Baptist ministries,"
he said.
But one Brooklyn Jewish com-
munal leader dismissed that ex-
cuse, saying it shows that the
Jewish community is falling
down on the job.
`The problem with the Jewish
community is it has not come up
with new and innovative meth-
ods to attract the Russian Jew
on the street," said Rabbi Joel
Dinnerstein, founder of the Ohr
Ki Tov Center for Growth and
Transformation and director of
the Abraham Residence, which
provides permanent housing and
services for older Russian immi-
grants in Seagate, Brooklyn.
"We have more money than
any Jewish community in the
world. If we can't do it, who's go-
ing to do it?" ❑
