The cam- paign was dropped by Quaker Oats, reportedly on the advice of industry consultant Tom Pirko, president of Bevmark Consulting Group. Pirko told Newsday last year Kaufman's message was "too confining for a drink that at- tempts to appeal to a mass mar- ket. Not everyone in the country starts the morning with a bagel." The bagel remark led some to speculate that Pirko, hence Quaker, considered the Snapple lady too Jewish. Kaufman will say only that when she signed on with Triarc this spring, "It felt great to be able to wish them a happy Passover." Snapple's market value took a dive during Quaker's owner- ship and Pirko's consultancy, and some industry analysts have pointed to the axing of Wendy as part of the problem. Triarc this spring snapped up Snapple for $300 million. Now the company — which also mar- kets Mistic drinks — is count- ing on Kaufman to help polish the Snapple image as a small- town product that can quench a nationwide thirst. She already has appeared on radio shows across the county and on "Live With Regis and Kathie Lee." And Triarc even threw Kauf- man a parade on Fifth Avenue last month. "People were honking their horns and yelling, We miss you, Wendy,"' recalled Kaufman, a lifetime Hadassah member who has shared her career story at local meetings. "I put my arms in the air, and in my best Scar- lett O'Hara imitation I said, 'As God is my witness, I will never eat oatmeal again!' " Jewish Week Concert Strikes Sour Note ERIC J. "Bring a chair or a blanket and invite the family," the flier sug- gested.
