P.M PO EU ME,
DINE WHERE
WINNERS DINE!
/
"I attended Margaret McCul-
lough Elementary School. One.
day, I came in late to Mrs. Sil-
loway's music class and the class
was playing and singing 'Loch
Lomond.' That is when I fell in
love with Scottish, Irish and
Welsh songs and poetry. If you
buy me a double shot of Tul-
lamere Dew, I'll sing 'Loch
Lomond,' Sound the Pibroch' or
Boolavogue' for you.
"Murray told me that he had
some Austrian postage stamps.
So I went home with him to see
the stamps. He showed me his
collection of baseball cards also.
We played some kind of a game
where I won all his baseball
cards. He cried like a baby, so I
gave them back to him. We have
been good friends for over 60
years. His dad, Mr. Hozman,

Loan, a king's ransom in those

days. Every Sunday, Mr. Hoz-
man would take me and Al Shiff
to the Eagle Dairy ice cream par-
lor on Davison near LaSalle. You
got two scoops for a nickel.
"I sent my German souvenirs
to the Hozmans. I came in on fur-
lough, enroute to Germany, when
Murray's niece, Ellen Sachs, was
born. Mr. and Mrs. Hozman were
two of the finest people I ever
knew.
"On the north side of Cortland
at Lawton lived the Weingartens.
Benny Weingarten was an all-
around athlete. He entered and
won the decathlon (10 events)
and became a dentist.
"A couple of houses away lived
Buddy and Mary Meyerson of
Buddy's Bar-B-Q. My brother,
Naudy, was a busboy and I was
a rib-setter. We both worked
there on the whole night preced-
ing and the early morning of De-
cember 7, 1941, date of the attack
on Pearl Harbor.
"Jerry Meyerson was a mem-
ber of the Rex Club with about
20 others from the area. My pal
Joe Silbershein had a Buick
Roadmaster and his dad had all
kinds of ration stamps because
he had a cooperage business.
"Sol Kalt and Lou Golden were
partners at Kalden Sheet Steel
where I was given my first job af-
ter leaving the Statler Hotel on
June 15, 1950."

CONGRATS ... to Bunny and
Alan Nichamin of Scotsdale,
Ariz., visiting the hometown ...
and to Alan on his 60th birthday.
They were greeted with a sur-
prise party celebration for about
90 at Nifty's in Walled Lake, giv-
en by their daughter, Leah.
A high point was when Margo
Woolf Cohen, Roy Woolf, Leonard
Woolf and Bonnie Woolf Stein-
gold, sang a tribute to them to the
tune of the late Sammy Woolf s
theme song, "When You're Smil-
ing."
Margo and Roy are Sammy
and Ann's children ... Mickey and
Evelyn Woolf were the parents
of Bonnie and Lenny.
If they weren't singing direct-
ly to Bunny and Alan, you can
bet your boots that she would
have been up there too.
Morey Cohen didn't play the
trumpet, but his and Margo's son
Eric led the throng in singing.
Ann Woolf, Sammy's wife,
looks great, and sat in nostalgic
memories of the Big House at
Woodhull Lake where the kids
used to sing and dance while
Sammy sang.

THE ANNUAL Bet Tzedek
legal services fund-raiser in Los
Angeles is usually a black tie din-

But this year, through the ef-
forts of former localite Randy Ka-
plan, 28-year-old attorney and
managing director of Sun Amer-
ica, owned by Eli Broad, another
gent from hereabouts, it was held
at LA's House of Blues, with over
1,000 tickets sold.
Randy conceived the event and
chaired its 41-member planning
committee, whose oldest mem-
ber is 34 years old.
