sertiveness, also juggles ma-
chetes — doing a vaudevillian
turn by dropping the machetes
as part of her act — and dreidels
through the Macarena as she
Houdinis her way out of a strait-
jacket of several layers of chains.
"It's not enough for me to grow
hair on my face anymore," she
says wryly. "You have to have

An aficionado of Yiddish cul-
ture and a frequent visitor to
Klez Camp, the annual Yid-
dishist fest in the Catskills,
Miller muses, "I would have
liked to have been a rabbi, if only
I started my education earlier."
Anyway, what do rabbis have
that most women rabbis don't?
"A beard," laughs the bearded
lady who lives in Chasidic
Williamsburg. "I'm almost a Sat-
mar. If only they would let me."

What's Jewish about the freak
show, we ask her. "I am," she an-
swers.
But more than that. Unlike
other cultures that left freaks to
die on the edge of town, or to
float away down the river, or to
even be killed as a way of ex-
purgating Satan, Jews tradi-
tionally retained the idea that
freaks were just another of God's
creations, and were actually cre-

strange-looking person: Blessed
art Thou, Lord our God, King of
the Universe, Who makes the
creatures different.
"I talk to God now and then,"
says Miller. "Especially when I
need help," she says laughing.
"I'm like everybody else. What I
say to God is, 'God, please help
me get through all this little day
of terror.' Other times I have to
thank God for the gloriousness
of it all."
Zigun, who also masterminds
Barnumesque events for the
freak show's neighbor, the
mighty Cyclone roller coaster,
brought out the Yiddishkeit for
the Cyclone's 70th birthday a
few weeks ago.
Of course, he also brought out
a Revlon supermodel to pop out
of a cake, and one of the Flying
Wallendas to tightrope across
the Cyclone's peaks. But he
specifically brought out Brook-
lyn's Rabbi Eli Greenblatt to
bless these summer amuse-
ments.
"Our Father in Heaven," said
the rabbi, "look with favor as we
gather together this morning at
a symbol of our community ...
may this sacred spot [recall] the
