STORM RELIEF
FUND

In response to the devastating damage from recent storms

in Detroit, a relief fund has been launched
by the Jewish community of metropolitan Detroit.

Contributions will help rebuild facilities of Focus:HOPE,
an organization with which the Jewish community
has worked closely on numerous occasions.

Ms. Gordon worked through a
home-study course, saw the
country first-hand and then par-
ticipated in a two-day workshop
and seminar in Switzerland.

Egypt-Israel
Oil Project

Jerusalem (JPFS) — The con-
tract for the construction of a $1.3
billion joint Israeli-Egyptian oil
refinery at Alexandria entered
into force, meaning the largest
single Arab-Israeli joint venture
to date will be a reality, accord-
ing to Nimrod Novick, the senior
vice president of the Merhav
Group, the Israeli partner in the
scheme.
Construction work began
some two months ago, with Mer-
hav's investment, the largest of
any Israeli company in Egypt.
Initially, Merhav and the Hus-
sein K. Salem Group of Egypt
both held a 40 percent stake in
the project, with the Egyptian
General Petroleum Corporation
(EGPC) holding the remainder.
However, in January EGPC
upped its share to 60 percent,
while the other partners reduced
theirs. Through the sale, Merhav
and Salem have reduced their in-
terests to some $70 million.
The refinery will produce an
estimated 100,000 barrels a day,
two-and-a-half times the amount
Israel annually imports from
Egypt. The construction contracts,
worth $1 billion, were awarded to
a European consortium and four
American companies.

Publicity Deadlines

The normal deadline for local news
and publicity items is noon Thurs-
day, eight days prior to issue date.
The deadline for birth announce-
ments is 10 a.m. Monday, four days
prior to issue date; out-of-town obit-
uaries, 10 a.m. Tuesday, three days
prior to issue date.
