Hillel of Metro Detroit an-
nounced this year's scholarship
recipients. Wondifraw H. Desta
is the recipient of the Max Carp
Scholarship. Heidi Brookenthal
and Michelle Rubenstein have
been awarded the Direnfeld
Family Scholarship.
These scholarships are
awarded to undergraduate or
graduate students currently en-
rolled in a metropolitan Detroit
university on the basis of acad-
emit strength, need, service to
the community, and HMD in-
volvement.

Sheryl Freedland
La'Asot
Director Named
La'Asot, a local Jewish political
activist organization, has named
Sheryl Freedland as executive
director of the organization.
Freedland, who holds a master
of arts degree in art history and
a master's in the philosophy of
art history from Yale Universi-
ty, will be responsible for
La'Asot's day-to-day operations,
increasing membership as well
as managing major programs for
La'Asot.
Freedland also holds a bach-
elor of arts degree and is a grad-
uate cum laude from Barnard
College/Columbia University.
She has worked at the School of
Education at Harvard Universi-
ty and has been a teaching as-
sistant and guest lecturer at Yale.
Na'amat Group
Holds Picnic
The Men Friends of Na'amat/
Sallen Chapter will host a picnic
Wednesday, July 30, for family
and friends at Heritage Park on
Farmington Road in Farmington
Hills.
This event is a fund-raiser. The
proceeds go to support child day-
care centers in Israel. The cost is

Preserves Records
The Women of Maimonides Med-
ical Society, with the assistance
of volunteers at Jewish Federa-
tion, have begun to reorganize
and search for records, photos
and memorabilia depicting the
organization's 72-year history.
Efforts are being made to pre-
serve newspaper clippings, pho-
tographs and past donor
luncheon books.
All donations of such material
would be appreciated, as would
additional help in filing, photo-
copying and identifying members
in vintage photographs. To take
part in this project, call Sarah

A member of the Jewish Ed-
ucational Loan Service, Mai-
monides was established to assist
students in meeting their finan-
cial needs by awarding them with
interest-free loans. Inquiries by
students should be made through
