goes to Balak and He interposes
a sword-bearing angel on the
road. Balaam's ass sees the an-
gel and veers aside. Balaam does
not see the angel and beats the
ass. This happens three times
until the donkey speaks and re-
bukes its master. Then the angel
becomes visible to Balaam. The
angel acts as the Lord's agent
and then the Lord Himself in-
trudes upon the scene twice, but
in each case only when a miracle
is called for — to give the ass
speech and Balaam sight.
Maimonides, the rationalist,
understood the entire scene to be
a prophetic vision. Earlier, the
rabbis tried to reduce the mirac-
ulous element by declaring that
the speaking ass was really or-
dained by God on the eve of the
first Sabbath as part of creation
and, therefore, did not constitute
an interruption of the natural or-
der. Here was this ass, the stu-
pidest of creatures, and there
was the wisest of all wise men.
Yet, as soon as the ass opened its
mouth, Balaam could not stand
his ground.
Balak greets Balaam and
takes him to a height where he
might see a portion of Israel's en-
campment. King Balak first in-
structs Balaam to try to dispose
the Lord in his favor through a
sacrificial ritual. The Lord dic-
tates to Balaam His specific mes-
sage of blessing. When Balaam
spied the people of Israel from
the heights and realized their
strength-and numbers, he knew
God had no intention of cursing
them.

God is
angered.

Balak is shocked and hurt by
Balaam's praise of Israel, only to
find out that the Lord as king of
Israel is invincible. Balak blurts
out that Balaam should at least
refrain from blessing Israel. Bal-
aam responds that he is only do-
ing God's bidding.
Now come the climactic ora-
cles. In the first one, only God de-
termines blessings and curses.
Israelites themselves will be
blessed or cursed. The final ora-
cle predicts the destruction of
Moab and other enemies. Thus,
a fitting and ironic conclusion
comes to the Balaam story as
Balak of Moab wished to curse
Israel and his hired seer curses
Moab.
No person can fully under-
stand the intentions of God and
often what is perceived as a curse
turns into a blessing. Balaam's
words become blessings that are
included to this day in the Sab-
bath morning prayers. His pro-
nouncements have a poetic
rhythm and power to praise the
very people whom King Balak
wanted to curse.
