1997 JEEP GRAND C EROKEE LIMITED
LYNNE MEREDITH COHN STAFF WRITER
t was a warm summer night,
perfect for learning — at least
that was the perspective of al-
most 70 women who gathered
at Lonestar Coffee Co. in Birm-
ingham for the first in an ongo-
ing series of Jewish study
sessions.
"We thought it would be fun to
have some kind of event outside
of the shul in a mainstream en-
vironment," says Julie Sherizen,
a coordinator of the series. "That's
a problem, when you keep
kosher, to go some place and be
able to enjoy being out in public
and enjoy kosher food."
Lonestar is not a kosher coffee
shop. But Sherizen, Young Israel
of Oak Park's Rabbi Steven Weil
and Rabbi Yosef Krupnik of the
Council of Orthodox Rabbis were
given the go-ahead by Lonestar
owners Jay and Ryan Rosett to
check out the shop and identify
which coffees are kosher.
Lonestar's regular, decaf-
feinated, cappuccino and latte are
kosher, since they are made in
separate machines from the ones
that brew flavored coffees, says
Rabbi Weil. "Anything that has
either natural or artificial fla-
vorings requires hashgachah (su-
pervision)."
Lonestar is allowing the
women to bring in kosher cakes,
Rabbi Weil says.
Jay Rosett, Lonestar co-own-
er, says, 'We want to make Lon-
estar accessible for everyone in
the community. With our new
monthly literary series, a regu-
lar coffee night with Hillel of
Metro Detroit and now this reli-
gious learning session, we hope
to continue to introduce innova-
tive programs and expand our
clientele."
Two years ago, Rabbi Weil
launched a cigar smokers' schi-
ur. The women of the congrega-
tion wanted in on the action —
minus the smoke.
The July 14 schiur kicked off
what planners hope will be
monthly sessions at Lonestar.
The next session will be Wednes-
day, Aug. 6, at 8:30 p.m. Rabbi
Weil will speak about Tisha B'Av.
There is no charge for the
monthly sessions, but "because
of the largesse of the Lonestar
Cafe, we encourage people to buy
coffee to support Lonestar," Rab-
bi Weil says.
Although it began as a venue
for YIOP members, the event is
open to women in the communi-
ty. 0
