r. Celebration Of Service A national convention in Novi marks WAORT's 70th birthday. DEBBIE WEINSTEIN SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS W omen's American ORT (Organization for Re- habilitation through Training) will mark its 70th year of funding education- al programs throughout the world when it holds its nation- al convention in the Detroit area this weekend. The festivities begin at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Novi Hilton with the Great Lakes Young Leader- ship Initiative's "Best of Motown Gala." The event, open to the public if $50 tickets are still available, will feature live entertainment by Star Trax of West Bloomfield, a Motown trivia contest spon- sored by WOMC-FM, and a food buffet. "Big Al" Muskovito, one of Purtan's People from WOMC, will serve as auctioneer for the evening's silent and live auctions. The annual meeting session begins at noon Sunday at the Novi Hilton. Maxine Berman, former state representative, will speak on the "Political Empow- erment of Women." Women's American ORT National Presi- dent Ruth Taffel will be keynote speaker. Other meetings in conjunction with the convention will be held Saturday and Monday. Local ed- ucator Florence "Dinghy" Sharp, who overcame childhood dyslex- ia, will receive the Tikkun Olam Award on Saturday afternoon for her 40-year career in special ed- ucation. .Sharp created the Bucket Brigade Tutorial Program, a one- on-one tutoring concept used in school systems throughout the United States and overseas. The ORT celebration contin- ues Sunday evening with a bar- becue in honor of donors to Women's American ORT (WAORT). It will be co-hosted by David and Doreen Hermelin and Paul and Marlene Borman at the Hermelin home. Mr. Hermelin is president emeritus of the World ORT Union and Mr. Bor- man is president of American ORT. The Tzedakah Award will be presented to Doreen Hermelin for her continued involvement in ORT.
