LEWIS ERIC LACHTER SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

history that goes back to
before the Civil War.
Jews played an important
role in that war and also in the

BOTH IN ORCHARD MALL-WEST BLOOMFIELD

The glass conservatory at the Atlanta Botanical Garden.

jamin's portrait is in the cyclo-
rama of the Battle of Atlanta in
Grant Park. This huge, three-di-
mensional panorama recreates
the war through paintings,
miniature soldiers, narration
and multi-media effects.
More contemporary Atlanta
Jews worked with Martin
Luther King Jr. To relive the civ-
il rights era, visit the King His-
toric Site, a 10-block area that
includes Dr. King's home; the
Center for Nonviolent Social
Change, which includes his
grave and exhibits describing his
life; and the Ebenezer Baptist
Church, where he served as co-
pastor with his father.
The Carter Library and Pres-
idential Center is a short trip
from the downtown area and
well worth the journey. A high-
light of the library is the Peace
in the Middle East section.
There one can see photographs
of the meetings that led to the
Camp David accords and the
peace treaty between Israel and
Egypt; videotapes let you hear
the actual voices of the partici-
pants.
Today's Atlanta Jewish com-
munity of over 70,000 people
supports more than 20 syna-
gogues. There are also a busy
Jewish Community Center, Jew-

usual Sephardic congregation
Or VeShalom. The lobby is dec-
orated with oil paintings by Jew-
ish artists and a 3-D
stained-glass sculpture in or-
ange and green tones. The main
sanctuary has a high ceiling of
wood inset with 12 stained-glass
windows.
The JCC at 1745 Peachtree
Road NE welcomes visitors to
the varied activities, including
productions of Broadway hits,
the Yinglish Theater group, an
annual book fair and a wonder-
ful collection ofJudaica. The cen-
ter also houses the Zacher
Holocaust Resource Center.
There are many interesting,
non-Jewish sites in this south-
ern town. Atlanta is the home of
CNN, the cable news network,
and there is available a 40-
minute tour of the round-the-
clock studios.
The city is world headquar-
ters of Coca-Cola, and you can
tour the three-story building
that houses the multi-media ex-
hibitions.
If your taste is more toward
plants and flowers, check out the
Botanical Garden at the edge of
Piedmont Park. The Fuqua Con-
servatory has an indoOr display
of rare tropical and desert
plants.
