If 18-year-old soccer star Ziv Kav-
da is any example, Ethiopian un-
migrants are about to make their
mark on Israeli's closely-followed
sports scene, particularly in soc-
cer and distance running.
Kavda is probably the person
most responsible for the fact that
Israel's youth team has this year
reached the European soccer fi-
nals for the first time in its histo-
ry. Moreover, he is expected to be
a star with the senior team before
too long.
Life has not been easy for Kay-
da, who was initially brought up
by his grandparents after being
abandoned by his mother. In 1984
they took him with them to Israel,
where, after several years, he was
placed with a white family in
Holon, a suburb of Tel Aviv.
There, as chance would have
it, a member of the Holon soccer
team saw Kavda kicking around
a ball and came to the conclusion
that he had great natural talent.
So he brought Kavda to the youth
section of the Holon team, and,
before too long, he was invited to
join the national youth team as
well.
While Kavda is now a proud Is-
raeli, he has not forgotten his ex-
periences with racism in that
country. Soon after his arrival in
Israel, he recalls, "the neighbor-
hood kids were calling me 'a stink-
ing black." This doesn't happen
to Kavda any more, but he still
feels some people stare at him
when he goes out with his girl-
friend, Sharon Tubol, the daugh-
ter of Moroccan immigrants.
"I guess they are amazed," he
says, "to see me holding hands
with a white Israeli girl, or, for
that matter, using a mobile
phone. This makes me wonder:
Do they really think I am less of
a person than they are? In fact,
except for the color of my skin, Pm
Just like them."
More often, however, he is met
with smiles of recognition and
with requests for his autograph.
This is particularly true with
Ethiopian kids, for whom he is
clearly a role model. "Whenever
I come into contact with them,"
he notes, "they immediately tell
me how much they admire what
I have accomplished, and hope to
follow in my footsteps." ❑
