gious Council in Israel.
With issues of Jewish plural-
ism on the front burner both in
the United States and in Israel,
Bat Kol's founders hope to pro-
vide a place where women of all
the Jewish movements can
learn.
"I think it just rounds out the
picture here," said Blu Green-
berg, an Orthodox feminist and
author who is on Bat Kol's board
of advisers. "First of all, in terms
of looking at the text, it's valu-
able to have an academic and
learning institution that specif-
ically looks at text from a femi-
nist perspective."
Ms. Greenberg sees the yeshi-
va as offering a place where
women who have thought of
themselves as feminists first can
gain a love of sacred texts. Or-
thodox women, on the other
hand, can find a place where
they can bridge their love and
respect for Jewish tradition with
their feminism. The fledgling in-
stitution is funded with $85,000
from the Shefa Foundation. The
first session was held at the
Kerem Institute, a teacher train-
ing facility in central Jerusalem.
Students have access to the
Kerem Institute's library as well
as the library at Hebrew Union
College. And while there are no
immediate plans for the fledg-
ling yeshiva to find its own
space, the founders are hoping
it will develop into a year-long
program. They would also like
to run special seminars aimed
at lay and rabbinic leaders or for
mother/daughter study.
Bat Kol, which literally
means "daughter of a voice," has
often been translated to mean
the Divine voice, Rabbi Robins
said.
"It's the voice in rabbinic lit-
erature that comes from heav-
en to give the rabbis legal and
moral direction," she said. "It
doesn't take the feminine form
in Hebrew, but every term the
rabbis used had significance.
Even though -it's not translat-
ed as feminine, it does have fe-
male significance, so we are
claiming it." DI
