policy that must be met before
benefits can be paid. Most in-
surers require the policyholder
to need help in two of five activ-
ities of daily living (ADL) (eating,
bathing, dressing, toileting, walk-
ing). Others may require a doc-
tor to certify a nursing home stay
as medically necessary.
A good word from your doctor
leaves the insurer less room to
balk.
Waiver of premium is a must
for most consumers and a perk
that is fast becoming standard
on most policies. This rider lets
policyholders stop paying pre-
miums as soon as they enter a
nursing home without a two- or
three-month waiting period.
Care coordinator is a person
who coordinates your benefits,
adding an additional 5 percent
or so to your premium. Watch
out. This person can be anyone
from a physical therapist who
books your sessions to an em-
ployee of an insurance company
who's out to make sure you don't
get more care than you need.
Find out exactly who the in-
surance company has in mind
before you agree to foot the bill.
Home-care coverage is one of
the most popular products going
— and one of the most vague.
Some policies pay only for regis-
tered nurses to make occasional
visits to the patient's home, oth-
ers pay for full-time health aides,
housekeeping and personal care
chore services, professional ser-
vices (doctors, nurses, physical
therapy) and transportation
around town. Make sure your
agent spells out the coverage
specifically.
Daily benefit means how
much do you need to be paid per
day?
Benefit period means what
length of
the
policy to cover you?
Elimination period,
callEelicr deductible or waiting pe-
riod, means when do you want
the benefits to start being paid?
The first day? The 31st day? The
100th day after you enter the
nursing home? You will pay the
costs of LTC during the elimina-
tion period. Choosing a shorter
elimination period will increase
the monthly premium.
Death benefits are a refund to
your estate of premiums paid mi-
nus any benefits paid. Many com-
panies only offer death benefits to
applicants below ages of 65 or 70.
SHOPPING TIPS
It takes diligence to find your
best bargain. Prices and benefits
vary. Check with several com-
panies and agents before making
a decision.
Don't buy insurance in a hur-
ry. Reputable companies will still
be there tomorrow. All you need
is one policy that meets your
needs and circumstances.
Get a business card that iden
tifies your agent and make sun
that person is still employed
there and licensed to sell insur
ante.
Never, never pay in cash! You
payment should be check or mon
ey order made out to the compa
ny, not the agent.
Read the policy carefully whet
you get it in the mail. Make sun
what t you thought you we n
buying,
All this said, competition

in policy definitions and ex
panded coverage. LTC insurano

• Long-term care insurance (LTCI), although expensive, may pro-
vide important financial protection against costly needed care.
• If other options aren't viable, LTCI may be the one way to meet
your personal fmancial goals.
• If you have family caregivers, the extra home care coverage in
LTCI might make it possible for you to remain at home longer.
• LTCI premium costs increase with age at purchase, and once
you develop a serious medical condition you probably won't qual-
ify for coverage.
... Or Don't Buy
• Don't buy long-term care insurance (LTCI) if you can't afford the
premiums or don't have enough assets to protect and you would
quickly qualify for Medicaid even with private insurance.
• Other alternatives are more appropriate for meeting personal
financial goals.
• No LTCI policy has enough home care coverage to keep you
out of a nursing home without family members or informal care
givers help.
• Most LTCI policies pay back 60-65 percent of total premiums,
. much less than other types of health insurance.
• In a few years, you may get better deal because LTCI policies
are improving.
