Jerusalem (JPFS) - ECI Tele-
com of Petah Tikva announced it
has received a $54 million deal to
provide the Philippines Long
Distance Telephone Company
(PLDT) with equipment for phase
two of its "Zero Backlog Program,"
a plan designed to provide
600,000 new subscribers with
telephone access by the end of
1997.
ECI's success in beating out
competitors such as Lucent and
Siemens reflects its relationship
with the Filipino telecommuni-
cations firm.
In 1993, ECI won a $55 million
bid to supply PLDT with the
equipment for phase one of the
program. By the end of the first
phase, PLDT had provided tele-
com lines to 865,000 new sub-
scribers. The company, which is
bidding on several projects in the
Philippines, expects to increase
its activities there by the end of
the year.
The increased activity reflect
ECI's efforts to expand its busi-
ness in Asia. In January, ECI
completed a $100 million private
placement that was slated for
marketing efforts in the region.
Last year, ECI sold about $120
million worth of products in Asia.
In addition to the Philippines,
ECI has customers in Hong Kong,
Singapore, Vietnam, Taiwan, In-
donesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia
and Thailand.
The company would not give
an estimate for expected 1997
sales in Asia.
Since the beginning of the year,
ECI has received several major
orders from around the world. In
February, Belgacom announced
it awarded ECI a $30 million deal
to be the Belgian telecommuni-
cations operator's sole supplier of
access-network pair-gain solu-
tions; in March, British Telecom
awarded ECI a $58 million, thr ee
year contract for telecommuni.
cations technology; and recently
ECI completed a $65 million deal
with China's Ji Tong.
Israel Seeks
Trade Expansion
Jerusalem (JPFS) - Israel and
Jordan will make a joint ap-
proach to the United States to ex.
pand the Israel-U.S. free trade
agreement to include certain ar-
eas in Jordan, the industry and
trade ministers of the two coun-
tries agreed.
The agreement would apply to
joint ventures between Israel and
Jordan, with the U.S. recogniz.
ing the scheme in certain geo.
graphical areas, including Irbid
and Aqaba.
Ministers Natan Sharansky
and Hani Mulqi sent a letter to
the U.S. official responsible for
free trade with Israel, Charlene
Barshefsky, and to ministers in
the Trade and State departments,
Mr. Sharansky said some of the
obstacles to trade between Israel
and Jordan could be lifted soon,
but did not elaborate. "We both
agree our economic cooperation
has unique potential and those
problems which surround our
way can be removed very quick-
ly," he said.
A joint committee of the two
countries' standards institutes
will meet to discuss bridging dif-
ferences in operational methods
and standards.
Furthermore, the ministers
agreed to appoint an official in
each of their ministries who will
be responsible for ongoing COM-
munications. With official bilat-
eral trade still in its earliest
stages, Israeli exports to Jordan
average $2.5 million a month,
with imports from Jordan at $1. 5
million.
