and high privilege should have
been matched by equally great
powers of restraint, patience and
forgiveness. ,
This truth speaks not only to
Moses, but to all of us. He who
enjoys a privilege has a com-
mensurate responsibility. The
greater the privilege, the larger
the obligation.
It matters not whether the
privilege is leadership, wealth,
education or talent. The Talmud
says that with the righteous, God
is more exacting and demanding.
This truth has application to our
own time. We tend to view with
dismay and alarm the lawless-
ness of the underprivileged. We
are sickened by the gangs of the
slums who terrorize streets in the
major cities of the country. And
yet, upon reflection, we can un-
derstand that broken homes,
poverty and a corrupt environ-
ment stimulate these acts of law-
lessness. But what about those
on the upper level of the educa-
tional, social and economic ranges
of our country? Many who enjoy
life's privileges and security
demonstrate carelessness, irre-
sponsibility and wastefulness.
Worse yet, we see how people
who occupy positions of trust and
responsibility in business and fi-
nance, government and even re-
ligion violate the trust and
commit acts that dishonor their
positions. Are not their trans-
gressions greater precisely be-
cause of the exalted stations they
occupy?
It is pot difficult to criticize
others; it is much more difficult
to criticize ourselves. This
thought would not be complete
were it not applied to our own
lives. Being a Jew is a great priv-
ilege. Our religious and moral
heritage confers upon each of us
the vision and faith of all the
centuries that have preceded us.
We, as Jews, ought to set stan-
dards of integrity and moral ex-
cellence for our society. In our
relationships, we should demon-
strate our compassion. In our
striving for a better world, we
should seek the establishment
of justice. We ought to express
to our children and grandchil-
dren love and devotion for our
way of life. The great privilege
of being a Jew should be
matched by a sense of duty and
obligation to the advancement
and enrichment of that tradition
that forms our lives. We are to
be judged by standards different
from those that obtain for other
people.
Moses enjoyed the extraordi-
nary privilege of being God's
spokesman. When gave way to
impatience and faithlessness, he
violated the standards of his high
office and was disbarred from the
land of promise.
Let all who enjoy great privi-
lege be cognizant of this truth and
recognize the obligation it im-
poses. ❑
