League Disbands

After 70 years, the League of Jewish Women's
Organizations decides to give way to other groups.

E

Women in a large portion ofJew-
ish homes are working full-time
out of the house, and have less
time for volunteer work and nec-
essary meetings to support such
organizations.
That is why, after 70 years, the
League of Jewish Women's Or-
ganizations has decided to dis-
band. It is perhaps best known as
the group providing monetary
awards to high school seniors en-
tering college. That program will
continue, under the National
Council of Jewish Women.
In its mission statement, the
League says it is "a representa-
tive body of all Jewish women's
organizations in the Detroit area,
linking together the local divisions
of national organizations; syna-
gogue and temple sisterhoods;

ladies auxiliaries of medical, den-
tal and pharmaceutical fraterni-
ties; Zionist groups; veteran
groups; philanthropic and social
groups; art, cultural and educa-
tion clubs; family and social soci-
eties.
"It serves as a coordinating ve-
hicle for the interchange of
thoughts and ideas and methods
of procedure; striving to eliminate
duplication of effort, while en-
rolling Jewish women power on
behalf of humanitarian causes,
both communal and world wide."
The League has been around
long enough to see the results of
its mission statement. For in-
stance, its food initiation, CANS
(Cans Against Needless Starva-
tion), which started in 1976, was
the precursor for the ever-grow-
ing Yad Ezra, Detroit's kosher
food bank.
Its past liaisons with the De-
troit League of Catholic Women
helped lead to cooperative efforts
between Congregation Shaarey
Zedek"s Rabbi Irwin Groner and
Adam Cardinal Maida.
The Cooperative Council, which
has nine service groups of its own,

will continue to sponsor its annu-
al Chanukah parties and
Passover seders, as well as make
contact with Jewish residents of
various senior and foster homes.
"There is a true sense of sad-
ness," said Jeannie Weiner, a past
League and Jewish Community
Council president. "We feel good
about what this organization has
accomplished during the past 70
years. We all know that the De-
troit Jewish community is much
better off because the League ex-
isted. But we took a hard look at
ourselves and we knew it was
time to end it."
Marilyn Schakne, Beverly Can-
vasser and Ms. Weiner, all lead-
ers of the League, said the group
took a look at its mission state-
ment and saw that it wasn't "do-
ing what we said the mission is."
"The question is, do you keep
an organization with a separate
board for two or three strong pro-
grams?" said Ms. Weiner.
"I feel badly about it," said Mrs.
Canvasser, "but I realize that the
community is growing and solid-
ified and is more organized than
ever before." 0
