Star-Filled Gala All For HAVEN

I

he event was Hollywood-
style, but the heart and soul
were pure Detroit at the re-
cent 10th annual "Prome-
nade of Hope" for HAVEN at the
Star Southfield Entertainment
Centre. More than 1,200 patrons
raised approximately $400,000
to support HAVEN, a prevention
and treatment center dedicated
to victims of domestic violence
and sexual abuse.
From the moment guests en-
tered the Art Deco exterior of the
new Star Southfield Entertain-
ment Centre, they received
celebrity treatment. The Unique
Restaurant Corporation offered
cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, a buf-
fet dinner and dessert, while
popcorn was served from the
concession stand.
As guests mingled throughout
the complex, they were dazzled
by scenes and signs from Old De-
troit, which included a Fox The-
atre marquee and a Vernor's
gnome.

The Motor City concept was
powerful: A 1953 vintage
Corvette was on display near the
stage, while the Bat Hammer —
yes, the car from the latest Bat-
man sequel — greeted guests at
the door. The walls were deco-
rated with movie memorabilia
— scenes from Star Wars, Juras-
sic Park and even the Bates Mo-
tel sign from Psycho.
After dinner guests could
choose from the 6,000 seats in
the 20-screen theater to watch
the movie of their choice, all with
a digital sound system.
Executives from Loeks-Star
Theatres, Sony Retail Enter-
tainment and General Motors
greeted the crowd. Hedy
Nuriel, executive director of
HAVEN, thanked the crowd.

adults who desperately need our
