Neil Young and Crazy Horse
Edwin McCain
Year of the Horse
Misguided Roses
Reprise
Lava/Atlantic
Live albums from Neil Young
and Crazy Horse come along at
fairly regular intervals. But this
is Young and Crazy Horse we're
talking about, an ensemble
uniquely capable of turning a
ho-hum into an "Oh wow!" —
which it does quite often here.
A budget-priced two-CD set,
Year of the Horse was recorded
during the quartet's 1996 world
tour and is a companion piece to
the new Jim Jarmusch docu-
mentary of the same name. This
is one for the active Crazy Horse
fan, including among its 12
tracks more than a few obscuri-
ties.
Young and his boys should be
in fine form for the summer's
H.O.R.D.E. tour.
Hootie & the Blowfish was still
happening when this South Car-
olina troubadour made his ma-
jor label debut, so it was a good
time to bask in the reflected spot-
light and even parlay it into a hit
— "Solitude," which featured a
guest vocal from Hootie's Darius
Rucker.
But in this kind of situation, a
second album is crucial, and Mc-
Cain and his band deliver on Mis-
guided Roses, a collection of
crackling, passionate music that
shows earnest rock songs can still
be delivered in a manner that's
neither hackneyed nor contrived.
Misguided Roses follows the
acoustic-propelled lead of its 1995
predecessor, Honor Among
Thieves, but its arrangements are
more electric and often funkier.

NRBQ
You're Nice People You Are
Ron Sexsmith

Other Songs

With its playful spirit and well-
honed irreverence, NRBQ is the
perfect candidate for an album
of new children's music. The 12
songs on Nice People are sweet
tempered and charming, but
with sophistication and sly wit
to engage adults.
An anti-Barney, in other
words. Nice People's nicest: the
Beatlesy "Always Safety First,"
the Disneyesque "The Music
Lesson," the train-style instru-
mental "Next Stop Brattleboro"
and the pretty lullaby "Sleep."

V,
On the first album of its post-
B.H.E. (Big Hit Era), Blues
Traveler steers a course decid-
edly away from knockoffs of its
mainstream pleasing "Run-
Around."
In fact, the quartet messes
with its formula more than ever
before, embracing flavors such
as ska ("Felicia") and gospel
("Make My Way") along with a
palpable Southern tinge.
But the songwriting is still a
little stiff, and the recycled riff
count is growing with each suc-
ceeding album.
If you're a singer-songwriter and
Elvis Costello is one of your chief
boosters, odds are you're not
cranking out cheery pop ditties.
That's absolutely true of Ron Sex-
smith, whose 1995 debut made
him the champion troubadour of
critics and peers alike.
Other Songs is most com-
pelling when he's telling stories,
which combine charm with un-
expected macabre.

Fugees' three releases demon-
strated a depth of talent and an
original vision that made the
group a fresh force on a hip-hop
scene blunted by too many gangs-
ta wanna-bes. On his own, mul-
ti-instrumentalist Wyclef Jean
indicates that Fugees may be as
formidable individually as they
are collectively, deploying his col-
lective of musicians, rappers and
singers on a lengthy, sprawling
suite of songs that would be un-
wieldy if not for its broad and con-
sistently tasty musical sweep.
