Assuming that, like Jews today,
the wealthy of the desert were
charitable and were admired for
their philanthropy, and given the
natural if regrettable tendency we
have to flatter our benefactors, Ko-
rach may have thought he was as
wise, generous and good as peo-
ple told him he was. Moses, on the
other hand, was, we read, "the
most modest of men." Korach be-
lieved his press clippings. Today,
also, the wealthy expect to be ap-
pointed to positions outside their
areas of knowledge. Today, we
usually indulge them.
Rebellions need justification by
ideas, by the value of the alterna-
tive vision they offer. The rebel-
lion in the desert deserved to fail
because it lacked these. ❑
