ish elderly at a 300-bed nursing
home.
That Detroit's Jewish com-
munity does not operate a Jew-
ish nursing home is "tragic," he
commented, "because we have
hundreds of people who belong
in a Jewish facility and are lost."
Rabbi Feld began a full-time
chaplaincy June 1 through the
Jewish Federation's Commission
on Jewish Eldercare Services
(COJES), an agency that was
formed in the wake of the closure
of Prentis Manor, the last Fed-
eration-operated nursing home.
The chaplaincy was created al-
most immediately after COJES
became the umbrella organiza-
tion for Jewish Home and Aging
Services, Jewish Federation
Apartments, Jewish Communi-
ty Center, Jewish Family Service,
Jewish Vocational Service and
DMC-Sinai. COJES's mission is
providing support services and
cultural/religious programming
for older Jewish adults.
Margot Parr, executive direc-
tor of Jewish Home and Aging
Services, said many of the Jews
who live in these homes have had
little or no contact with a rabbi
in years. The chaplaincy is an ef-
fort to reach out to them, and CO-
JES is also starting up a
guardianship program to advo-
cate for and represent Jewish pa-
tients in nursing homes, she said.
After he bid farewell to Bertha,
the rabbi stopped by to talk with
Evelyn Ginter and Barbara Mel-
lon, both of whom told him that
yes, they grew up in Detroit.
When Rabbi Feld told them he'd
be stopping by to visit, both
women smiled broadly.
"I'm so glad," Evelyn said.
"Zei gezunt," Rabbi Feld said.
On his way out, he dropped by
the office to leave electric Shab-
bat candles donated by Young Is-
rael of Southfield, yarmulkes, and
an informational packet that in-
cluded a Jewish calendar and an-
swers to common questions about
Judaism. In his energetic style,
he provided a brief how-to on
Shabbat candlelighting to Ms.
Evola and her assistant.
Then he was off to the Quali
Care Nursing Center on East
Grand Boulevard in Detroit. Zip-
ping past the staff, Rabbi Feld
stopped by Lillian Tenenbaum's
room to chat for a few moments.
Although she suffers from
Alzheimer's disease, she seemed
genuinely happy to have a visi-
tor.
Rabbi Feld, who was ordained
at Yeshiva University, plans to
do something he did in St. Louis:
develop an "army of volunteers"
from synagogues, Jewish orga-
nizations and Jewish schools who
will go into the nursing homes
and develop relationships with
residents.
"I want to make sure there's a
Jewish presence in these facili-
ties, wherever they may be," he

Code "
Are there codes in the Bible? Do similar codes appear in
other works as well? Do these codes indicate a Divine
authorship? Can these codes be used to predict the
future?
For over ten years, world class statisticians, mathematicians
and
Talmud scholars from the U. S. Defense Department Harvard, Yale,
the Technion, and Aish HaTorah have been researching Biblical
Codes. The new book written by Michael Drosnin claims that these
codes can predict the future. In light of this, Aish invites you to come
and hear Rabbi Michael Berger, one of the original members of the
research team that pioneered the codes explain and clarify what the
codes really signify.
