gregation to offer personal bless-

"The Reform movement is be-
coming more inclusive of ritual,"
he admits. "The early Reform
movement tried very much to
Americanize itself, be very much
like their neighbors. They looked
to the Protestant Church as a
model — sit in pews, choral mu-
sic, organ music, prayer in the ver-
nacular, decorum. It is much less
formal now."
Back then, Reform congregants
"weren't allowed to" wear kippot
or talleisim, says Rabbi Cas-
tiglione. Today, "we acknowledge
that they are tools, we allow folks
whatever tools they need on their
journey to God."
Annette Fink welcomes the
turn toward tradition.
"I'm very comfortable with be-
ing Jewish, very proud of being
Jewish, and I find the traditions
comforting. I'm happy to see some
of the traditions from the Conser-
vative, which I happened to grow
up in, returning."
"Now ... the cantor really has a
very, very big role in the service,
as they do in the Conservative,"
Ms. Fink explains.
Lois Gerenraich agrees. "I find
that it's being welcomed by most
people. This staff listens, and
they accommodate almost every-
body." ❑

While Bais Chabad is mailing
information on the group to
women affiliated with Orthodox
shuls in the area, Mrs. Silber-
berg says the program is open to
any Jewish woman.
"Everybody's involved in their
own lives and own synagogues,
and there should be some sort of
umbrella group, to study to-
gether, share concerns and dif-
ferent interests," she says.

or some people, the corn- next gathering, scheduled for
ing of a new month simply July 1, will include a D'var
means turning the page on Torah by Orah Jundef, rebbet-

month has long been a spe-
cial time for Jewish women,
a holiday to celebrate wom-
anhood and a time to say,
"No men allowed."
Under the leadership of
Chaya Sarah Silberberg,
rebbetzin of Bais Chabad of
West Bloomfield, some ob-
servant women in have
started a group called N'shei
Rosh Chodesh. It meets
monthly and is intended to
acquaint, and build bonds
between, Jewish women.
The first gathering, held
last month, attracted about
25 women for a discussion of
the significance of Rosh
Chodesh on the Jewish cal-
endar and the relationship
between women, Rosh
Chodesh and the new moon, %,
Mrs. Silberberg says. The Chaya Sarah Silberberg: Bringing Jewish women together.

There are alsO some practical

"By living in the same commu-
nity, we share certain concerns.
This is a forum for getting to-

interests and concerns."
Each gathering will feature a
speaker on topics of Jewish in-
terest as well as of concern to
women and women's health,
Mrs. Silberberg says.

Mrs. Silberberg adds,
"Why shouldn't we know
who we are? If I'm in
Farmer Jack on Thursday,--/
night, let me know to say,
`Have a nice Shabbos' to
another woman who's
there." ❑
